
Our mission is to provide excellence in three major areas: clinical care of the patient with cardiovascular disease, training of the next generation of cardiovascular physicians, and research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Beginning in 2003, collaboration between cardiologists and the emergency department at Saint Louis University Hospital has focused on significantly improving care for patients with ST-segment-elevation myocardial infarction.

Patients in shock following the development of a heart attack can be supported utilizing a catheter based heart pump (Impella) to allow time for the heart to heal and recover. Patients who are told they have a high-risk or cannot undergo bypass surgery or coronary stenting procedures for advanced coronary artery disease have the opportunity to undergo coronary stenting in the J. Gerard Mudd catheterization lab with the aid of a catheter based heart pump (Impella) to support the patient during and immediately following the procedure.
