Dr. Shah joined Saint Louis University Faculty in 1992. She conducts basic research in complications of diabetes in insulin-insensitive tissues such as the brain and eye. She was awarded NIH funding for the brain work. She has published several research articles in peer review journals. Her findings that altered glucose metabolism in the brain and the eye is responsible for cognitive impairment and diabetic retinopathy in diabetic patients is revolutionary. Even more impressive is the finding that the onset and progression of these debilitating effects of diabetes can be slowed by treatment with carbonic anhydrase inhibitors such as topiramate, a drug already in clinical use for other diseases.
