Dr Kanwal joined the faculty at Saint Louis University School of Medicine in 2005. She completed her gastroenterology and hepatology training at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). She received Masters in Health Services from UCLA School of Public Health.

Her primary research interests are quality of care, health-related quality of life, and cost and effectiveness of competing management strategies in chronic liver disease. She has published extensively in these areas using techniques of outcomes research. She collaborates with the Outcomes programs at UCLA, SLUCor, and Saint Louis Veterans Affairs (VA) Medical Center. She provides general gastroenterology and hepatology services at the VA Medical Center.
