Fellowship

Training Program Overview

The curriculum of the fellowship training program is flexible and allows for two major paths or tracks. The clinical nephrology track comprises a two year fellowship consisting of 20 months of clinical rotations and 4 months of laboratory investigation.

The clinical activities are principally divided among the inpatient and outpatient services of the Saint Louis University Medical Center and the John Cochran Veterans Administration Hospital.

Fellows desiring a career in academic nephrology can be assigned to the research track. The clinical activities of this path are reduced compared to the clinical track, however, a third year of training is required. This year and a much of year two is devoted exclusively to laboratory or clinical investigation. The research fellowship can be tailored to the specific needs of the fellow. Opportunities for clinical and basic research projects are abundant, including the application of protein and lipid biochemistry, renal micropuncture, immunocytochemistry, the study of transmembrane and intracellular signaling and molecular biology. Collaborative projects involving the departments of biochemistry, pathology, pharmacology, and physiology are encouraged.
